Recently retired from a job as a University Professor, and looking for diversion in sunny Southern California, Loran Holt did what any Southern Californian does – took up writing, of course. Feeling that sword-and-sorcery suited her personality admirably, she set her sights on that genre. Nightmasters is the result and her first published work of fiction, but she is already the published author of two books on silent film costume design.

Kelgan Defthand is used to being top dog at the Academy of Magic where he is Senior Apprentice Mage. Faster, more skillful, and well aware of it, than his peers, he is shaken to find himself beset by fearful voices, which come in the night, and ask fearful and unanswerable questions. He is further shaken when he is strangely “hired” by the aristocratic di Nerrill twins only to discover that the world outside the cloistered Academy is a bit different than he imagined. First of all, there seems to be women doing magic! Secondly, he is not the only one to hear voices. And lastly, it seems there is a terrifying need to confront those voices. A need which inexplicably centers around a truly unprepared, and most reluctant, Apprentice Mage. Kelgan and the di Nerrills will embark on a fateful journey which will draw others in and test his underdeveloped skills to the limit. The first book in a projected trilogy, Kelgan’s saga will continue.

“Author Loran Holt is sure to wow readers from 16 to 96 with her beautifully written NIGHTMASTERS. Untested mage Kelgan – along with a startling array of unique characters – faces life and death tests in this unparalleled fantasy journey.

The author’s world-building skills are evident from the get-go. Equally important, Holt’s grasp of good versus evil, honor versus dishonor, and the fine line between triumph and tragedy provides the underpinning of her creative efforts. Delighted readers will savor this five-star treat!”
